Curse of the White Toyota Corolla

Craig's List, a secondary market online for goods and services today proclaimed the umpteenth time that it is "looking into" allegations of paid sex being offered on its sites. So (naturally) it reminded me of White Toyota Corolla.

In Kabul, White Toyota Corolla was associated with security threats. It was sufficient for a security firm to issue the warning that "a white Toyota Corolla containing explosives was seen inside the city" and regular expat life would be shut down. UN would declare White City, ministries would be out-of-bounds for us, and we would sit at home/office and sulk.

Similarly, in Dhaka Gulshan-Banani area, the White Toyota Corolla is synonym for robberies. Typically, expat women on rickshaws are targeted, and then their handbags are snatched. This happened to couple of my friends, so I know that it is not a myth.

Anyway, imagine someone blaming Toyota company for these robberies and attacks and Toyota issuing a press statement that "they are investigating".
