So I was up 2am in the morning last night, and I decided to use this time to call up my good ol' friend, Jyo, from Bard. She's now married, and expecting her first kid soon. We were casually chatting about how things are, and life in NYC and Kabul, and suddenly it hit me that we haven't had a voice interaction in 8 years! The last time I saw her, we had breakfast/brunch together in Chicago with Likivi and Paul. That was Dec 1999!
Thanks to wonders of modern technology, we share pictures, send updates, text messages, etc. and be in touch with each other, so it seemed seamless to just hear her voice and take it from where we left off, and start chatting about people we know.
Jyo talked about the time when 3 of us walked into a McDonalds drive-thru and ordered our meal as if we were driving. And we got our food on foot. Luckily, it wasn't busy, so there weren't any car running us down.
And my favorite memory is of two of us being stuck in the middle of Kingston-Rhinecliff toll bridge when her car ran out of gas. We were listening to a song on the radio and didn't want to turn the car off at the gas station before the bridge. I walked to the bridge maintenance, and they were nice enough to bring a can of oil that helped us to the next station in Kingston. I wish I could remember what the song was.
And the quotation in the current subtitle of my blog is from the movie, Fargo. We saw it together. We were studying for the GREs at her apt, and wanted to take a break. So we went downstairs, grabbed couple of slices of Pizza from the pizzeria, and got the VHS copy of Fargo, and completely ignored our exam.
Now that I've initiated a voice contact, I think it's high time we organize a face-to-face contact. But that's the thing about old friends, I know it'll be as if we haven't skipped a bit.
