There was a time and place when I was an avid reader. That time has left me about 10-15 years ago, when I discovered movies.
I think I'm too lazy to create my own universe around spoken words. I'd rather have someone paint it for me in one and a half hours. That frees me up to catch up on other things, like sleeping.
Having said that, I do enjoy books after watching the movie. I read English Patient after falling in love with the movie. I read Sense and Sensibility and Emma after watching the movie versions, so I could compare the notes.
I got addicted to Harry Potter series, after my good friend Sunil M encouraged me. I saw the first movie, read the first book, read the second, third and fourth book, then saw movie 2, read book 5, saw movie 3, and so on.
I love the 3rd book, Prisoner of Azkaban, the most, and I thought the movie just sucked. If I had my way, people would be chasing Alfonso Cuaron with pitchforks and set him on fire for completely destroying the book experience. And after watching Y tu Mama Tambien, Little Princess and Children of Men, I am safely going to ignore any future film by this filmmaker.
I thought the Goblet of Fire (book 4) was a better movie than the book. And the Order of the Phoenix was such a boring book, I have no intention of watching the movie. But I was hooked on the Half blood Prince, and am eagerly awaiting the movie.
Now the new book, Deathly Hallows, is 678 pages long. I found the interesting conclusion here. And I spent the time I saved by skipping the book on something productive.
Like talking to my two nephews in fake spanish (Spa-ngali) and brainstorming on how to say "Fat Lady" in as many languages possible, as we did last night.
Now that's entertainment!
