Let's make love, er, film
I have had this long dream to make films. I want to make the most visually striking film, surpassing Tarsem Singh's films in terms of visual audacity.
I recently sat in on a meeting with an upcoming filmmaker. The disturbing thing was, he proceeded to read aloud some parts of the film, which had nothing to do with plot or characterization. He already has an attractive promo graphics for the film.
This is what he said, there'll be bloody hands, and the camera will pan out (I'm paraphrasing) to show a smoky area, with a woman screaming, and zoom in on a woman's face. I wasn't sure if that's all the script has. I was polite, made appreciative noises at the right times, and left it at that. I was tired, so maybe I was a bit impatient.
When I think of film, I think of characters that the audience will want to spend time with for 2-3 hours. I don't think of individual shots, and I want the dialogue to be light and ethereal, realistic, but still poetic. I find a dearth of directors who know how to use realistic dialogue in Bangla.
Anyway, my story begins at a busy intersection in Dhaka, with three characters trying to jump into a train. One girl, two men. They are casual acquaintances to each other. They speak Bangla of course, but because of the train noise, they also spend a lot of time not speaking to each other, and using gestures and body language to communicate.
I guess I could jump directly in promoting a film, but I want the characters to come alive, and that's why it's been a slow gestating process.
