Ethnicity of a soul?

I was looking at a title by Joyce Carol Oates, and ran into her new creation called Nordic Soul. It is published in Conjunctions, one of the Bard magazines I worked for couple of weeks, way back in 1994.

This gave me a pause. Does Soul know that it is Nordic, Aryan, South Asian or anything else? Is there a cultural context to the soul? Are we wrong in assuming that the soul is universal?

Needs bit of soul searching.
