199. Eucalyptus

I've been fascinated with the film adaptation of Murray Bail's book Eucalyptus, which was supposed to star Russell Crowe and Nicole Kidman. The book describes how a protective father's obsession with collecting rare species of Eucalyptus trees leads him to propose a contest -- the man who can correctly name all the species on his property shall win her hand in marriage

Non-making of the movie is an exercise in things that sometimes go wrong even with the best of intentions. The studio finally abandoned the project. Perhaps this whimsical fable was not deemed to be of blockbuster potential. Maybe Nicole Kidman isn't the right person to portray a passive spinster. Now we'll never know.

I encounter this eucalyptus tree on the picture every day. It sits right in the middle of the entrance to IBA. The leaves sometimes fall on the ground, and the beautiful smell of the bark travels far and wide on rainy days. Usually I try to take a picture of the Krishnachura tree over by Modhu's Canteen, seen at a distance, and the tree stands in the way.

But yesterday, I found a nicer KC tree near Rokeya Hall. And it was so bright, the eucalyptus tree was shining bright, and it itself became a worthy subject.
