Kiss the Girl -whichever is near you

Well, this post is about three of my favorite girls, Ariel, Reese and Li.

The Little Mermaid Special Edition is out on DVD, and I plan to buy it. Over the lifetime, I've owned a pirated VHS in PAL, an original VHS in NTSC, a video CD, a DVD, and a CD of the Sound Track. But Ariel and the gang has always been there with me. I actually love the original story where she dies, but this movie made me almost forget the original story.

In my teen years, I went through a phase where I felt trapped under the sea, and wanted to grow legs so I could walk away. And I did, and like her, gave up the most precious things I had. And never looked back. And like the Disney version, I was kissed, and didn't die in the end.

There's a interesting article at the MSNBC web site about the Oscar Best Actress curse, 5 of the 8 last Best Actress winners separated from their partners right after their win. Previously it was julia roberts, halle berry, helen hunt, hillary swank (won twice), etc. And now it's Reese Witherspoon in the same boat.

I loved Reese ever since Pleasantville, where I cried through the entire movie (I cry a lot in movies) and have eagerly sat through Legally Blonde and Vanity Fair to see how she weaves magic. My recent favorite is Just Like Heaven, where she is dead most of the time!

Our office was trying to get her to our State of the World's Mothers publication launch in NY, and I was very excited. In the end, it didn't happen. But I love her, and wish her the best.

Lastly, I love Gong Li. I loved her in Raise the Red Lantern, and To Live. She can convey emotions through simple eye twitches. There's a buzz that her new movie, Curse of the Golden Flower, made by her ex-boyfriend Zhang Jimou and starring Chow Yun Fat is generating an oscar buzz for her. Let's hope she doesn't sign up for Miami Vice 2 in the meantime.
